Tommy (1969) is one of The Who's two good-all-out rock operas, and a 1st musical theater function explicitly billed as a rock opera. Inside occasionally older publications these are known as Tommy (1914-1984). A opera was composed by World health organization guitar player Peter Townshend, with 2 tracks contributed by World health organization bassist John Entwistle and one fictitiously attributed to World health organization drummer Keith Moon, though actually written by Townshend. [http://www.thewho.net/discography/songs/TommysHolidayCamp.html] An sooner song by blues artist Sonny Boy Williamson was also incorporated into a opera. Swimming period is 74 proceedings.
Inside 2003 the TV network VH1 named Tommy the Ninetieth greatest album ever.
Story
Tommy is the fictitious life story of Tommy Walker. Tommy's father got been employed when missing in action during World War I, but he is restored unexpectedly within 1921 and kills his wife's fresh lover ahead of the seven-month-old Tommy. Tommy's parents enjoin him that "you didn't hear it, you didn't see it ... you won't say nothing to no-one", & Tommy retreats into hearing loss, slow-wittedness, & cecity following. He has the visiin of the tall alien dressed around silvery robes by owning the golden floor-length beard, presumptively an substitute father surrogate, & the vision sets him on a spiritual journeying. When you took a remainder of his childhood he suffers abuse at a paws of various personal members, & he interprets all the physical sensations when music. 1 Christmas he is given the poxy pinball machine & he presently becomes the master of the game, sustaining fans and groupie-wannabes just rather a popular star (hinting that the whole story occurs as caustic remark in its creator's have career). He is eventually cured after the doctor site him prior to the mirror & his mother, noticing that he seems to look at his have reflection, shatters the mirror around a pique. Thenceforth he assumes a messianic mantle and endeavors to lead his fans to an "enlightenment" such as his have, however a heavily-handedness of his cult & a little of exploitation by his personal reason his followers to revolt against him. A story finishes equivocally by using a "Listening to you" chorus from either "Go to the Mirror", suggesting that Tommy will own shut a world out & returned to his fantasies once more when the insurrection.
Witharound its original album version, a story is quite unelaborated & details were typically filled around by Townshend in interviews. When more adaptations of a album appeared, a few details were filled within & others changed (e.g. the timeframe was changed to World War II and 1951 in some late versions & in a film version, a lover kills a hubby like than the converse).
Analysis and history
Musically a original album occurs as complex placed of pop-rock arrangements, typically depending upon Townshend's acoustic guitar & built higher by utilizing numbers of overdubs per quaterniin members of the b& using numbers of instruments, including bass, electric car & acoustic guitars, soft, organ, drumkit, gong, horn, 3-a portion vocal harmonies and occasional doubling on vocal solos. Despite this subservient richness a healthy tends to exist as super "stark", especially compared to to the band's late act. Numbers of of a instruments single pop up intermittently -- the x-microscopic "Underture" features one toot on the horn -- & whenever overdubbed numerous of the instruments come mixed at online levels that demand careful hearing to notice. Townshend mixes fingerpicking inside by owning his trademark power chords and flesh out riffs, and around occasionally delicate moments his guitar sounds about prefer the harpsichord. Moon's drumming is controlled using two or three striking moments; Entwistle's bass will bring support and profits will require a subservient lead within many cuts. Daltrey swaggers when lead vocalizer, however shares that role by having the others in a surprising total of tracks. Townshend's late interest withwithin synthesizers is foreshadowed per utilise of taped sounds played in reverse to give the whistling, chirping healthy in "Amazing Journey"; on a equivalent track a background singers imitate the healthy of gull.
"Amazing Journey" may be interpreted when a central pivot of Tommy, since its lyrics are essential to understanding what a opera is astir (beyond a facile story line). "Go to the Mirror" is a climax of a opera each musically & dramatically; tradition holds that after a band was touring the indicate survive the audiences would spontaneously have higher in the period of "Go to the Mirror" & remainside standing until a prevent -- hearing in silence, unlike a customary behavior of World health organization fans. "We're Not Gonna Take It / See Me, Feel Me / Listening to You" is the denouement, sustaining its ambiguous go to to the sooner state of the story reinforced crane-like by giving to the riff from either "Overture" & "Go to the Mirror" at a super prevent like than a hanker fade from either a studio recording. Various themes come repeated within different songs sequentially to give the opera a orderly sense.
A tracks "Overture", "Pinball Wizard", "I'm Free", & a "See Me, Feel Me / Listening to You" reprise were discharged when singles & had the in good order total of airplay. "Pinball Wizard" reached a top twenty in a America & the top 5 in the UK. "See Me, Feel Me / Listening To You" landed high in the top twenty in the United states & "I'm Free" reached a top 40. A "Overture" was besides covered by A b& known as The Assembled People and received a good deal of airplay. Tommy was inducted into a Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998.
A little one abuse that features soh conspicuously in the story induced much of cry once it was foremost freed. Although there keep close at hand too been complaints that a basic idea of the story was lifted from either The Pretty Things' 1968 concept album S.F. Sorrow, several precedents for Tommy exist in Townshend's own work, including "Glow Girl" (1968), "Rael" (1967), and "A Quick One While He's Away" (1966).
the few years prior to a album come out Peter Townshend explained his ideas & apparently actually thought out a bit of of the structure of the opera in the period of a notable Rolling Stone interview. John Entwistle claimed years when a release that he got never actually listened to a album because he was and then disgusted it when the endless takes and re-will require.
Editions
Tommy was originally freed as a 2-LP set with the thinly folder of lyrics & graphics around the triptych-style fold-out handle. Everthing trine of the outer panels of the triptych come spanned by one Pop Art painting by Mike McInnerney. the drawing occurs as sphere by having diamond-shaped cutouts & an sheathing of clouds & sea gull rendered using a figure-ground ambiguity. To a single side a star-spangled hand bursts from either the dark background, forefinger pointing send on. (A image above sole shows a central panel of the triptych.) A label's executives insisted in getting the picture of the band on the handle, and so little, barely recognizable images of the band members' faces were inserted into the gaps in the sphere, for each one sustaining an outstretched hand prefer a hesitant Tommy Walker. (A virtually all recent remastered Video release reverts to McInnerney's original nontextual matter forgoing a faces.) a internal nontextual matter consists of a photograph of a few jugglers/magicians & occasionally super elementary paintings that sole hint at illustrating the story.
MCA re-released a album as a ii-Video placed inside 1984. the Videos were inside separate jewel instances & apiece experienced a miniaturized copy of the original art & lyrics in the insert, though it simply involved 2 panels of the brilliant triptych. Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab later published it on one gold-plated Ultradisc in their Original Master Recording series, by using a good deal improved reproductiin of a nontextual matter (including the stack-away from the to the full original handle), & with the substitution of an replacement require on "Eyesight to the Blind". MCthe eventually freed their have remastered editiinside on one disc in 1996, complete by using dependable art & a written introduction by Richard Barnes.

Live recordings
Live recordings of Tommy are available on The Who: Live at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970 and The Who: Live at Leeds (Deluxe Edition), both recorded in 1970 but not released until 1996 and 2001, respectively. The Live at Leeds version is somewhat stiff, as if they were trying too hard to get a clean take for publication. The Isle of Wight version is rowdy and full of the trademark energy that made the Who a live powerhouse, but is unfortunately split across the two disks of the set. The Who also performed Tommy for its 20th anniversary during their 1989 reunion tour and it can be heard on the Join Together recording, but though that recording has its high points it comes nowhere close to capturing the spirit of the era that produced the opera. The Who also performed Tommy at Woodstock, but only a small part of the performance has been released.
Other incarnations
Tommy has also enjoyed other incarnations. In 1972 the London Symphony Orchestra released a symphonic version with the singing roles assigned to the band members and various other pop stars of the era, including Steve Winwood, Rod Stewart and Ringo Starr. Peter Townshend also plays a bit of guitar, but otherwise the music is entirely orchestral. In 1975 Ken Russell released a tongue-in-cheek movie version featuring The Who and an eclectic supporting cast including Elton John, Oliver Reed and Jack Nicholson; this version has achieved cult film status due to scenes such as Arthur Brown's portrayal of a priest in Tommy's cult, Ann-Margret's frolic in a pool of beans, and the brilliant satire on pop music presented by the "Sally Simpson" scene. In 1993, Townshend and San Diego playwright Des MacAnuff wrote and produced a Broadway musical adaptation of Tommy. Featuring several new songs by Townshend and an all-star cast, the production won a Tony Award that year, and various touring revivals have met with popular acclaim since. The musical version reorganizes the numbers, changes many lyrics, and moves the setting to post-World War II Britain.
